Ski Brodie is an independent guide. It does not sell tickets, take bookings or act for any resort, hotel or venue — everything below is booked directly with whoever provides it.
What follows is the order to do things in, which for this county matters more than it does for most.
Book first, and early
Accommodation, for anything in summer or in the first three weeks of October. The Berkshires have a small stock of small properties, and peak weekends genuinely sell out across a wide radius. Concert and theatre tickets, before accommodation if the trip is built around a performance. The calendar drives everything else here — see cultural attractions.
Group arrangements of any kind. Twenty or more people cannot be handled on the day, in any season. Winter rates are on group discounts, summer on group rates, and catered events on picnics.
Anything with a fixed date that cannot move. Weddings, conferences and reunions need the venue's cancellation and wet-weather terms settled before the deposit — the sequence is on planning an event.
Book a few days ahead
Ski and snowboard lessons for weekends and school holidays. Sessions fill, and the fallback is a much later slot. Formats are on ski and snowboard lessons, and one-to-one on private lessons.
Snow tubing sessions, which are sold in timed blocks with limited capacity and regularly sell out at weekends — see snow tubing.
Restaurant tables, in the south of the county in summer and on any concert night. Kitchens here are small and close early, which is covered on restaurants.
Season passes, which are not a booking but are priced by date — the earlier the tier, the lower the price. The arithmetic is on season passes.
Usually fine on the day
Lift tickets outside holiday weeks, though buying online in advance is generally cheaper than the window price.
Equipment rental, though the Saturday morning queue is real and the counter time can be halved by completing the form beforehand — see rentals.
Museum admission, except for special exhibitions.
Trails, walks and public land, which need nothing at all. The parking at popular access points fills by mid-morning at weekends, which is the only constraint — see outdoors.
The sensible order
Pick the dates, having checked the county calendar for anything that will fill the accommodation.
Book tickets for any performance the trip depends on.
Book somewhere to stay.
Book lessons, tubing and any table that matters.
Buy lift access online a few days out.
Leave everything else.
Before travelling
Check conditions on the morning of a ski day rather than the night before. Berkshire weather changes quickly and wind holds are the common disappointment — see when the hills run.
Check opening hours if travelling in November, April or May. A significant part of the county closes in those months.
Allow more driving time than the map suggests, particularly for the last stretch — see getting here.
Confirm anything booked months earlier. Dates move, and venues change hands.
